The e-book as an educational resource

How can the University best support lecturers who want to make e-books part of their teaching materials?

The e-book as a teaching resource is a collaborative project between the Centre for Educational Development (CED) and the libraries at Lund University. The aim of the project, which ran in 2013–2014, was to inventory the conditions for teaching staff wishing to make e-books out of teaching material they have written themselves.

The project discusses the production process for an e-book, for example how to choose an appropriate format, tool and reader.

Methods

In three pilot studies, three lecturers tested the production of e-books using the e-publishing programme Jutoh. A recommendation to the University was drawn up on the basis of their views and experiences, together with views from other lecturers on their own skills and need for support from the University for the production of e-books.

Results

The project proposes that Lund University should set up an organisation responsible for intelligence work, purchase and distribution of e-publishing software, personal support and supervision in the production, storage and distribution of e-books and support on copyright issues.
